Travel Berkey Water Filter - Must Have
On the open road, one of our biggest concerns was how to ensure that we always have a fresh supply of water to drink and cook with. After doing a lot of research on water filtration systems, we opted to go with the Travel Berkey as it is a simple stand-alone unit that is easy to clean, lightweight, and transportable. The unit is made from 304 stainless steel, which makes it a durable, rust-free solution. Most importantly, the water is DELICIOUS!
One thing that we learned when doing research is that most systems are basic water filters, but the Travel Berkey is a water purification system that removes 99.999% of 203 contaminants, including viruses, pathogenic bacteria, Chloramine, trihalomethanes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, heavy metals, and more. What this means is that we can use water from any source (tap, stream, lake, puddle, etc.) to fill our Berkey and save the water in our water tanks for showers, dishes, and other non-consumption needs. This is huge. What isn’t huge, is the size of the unit itself.
The Travel Berkey is the smallest system on offer. The Travel Berkey holds 1.5 gallons of water (and filters up to 2.5gal per hour) - we find this allows us to fill over 5 water bottles at a time! The unit is 19” tall x 7.5” in diameter with an upper chamber (at 12” tall) that nests within the lower chamber. Pour water into the top chamber and magical, yummy water is dispensed into the lower chamber. The Travel Berkey comes with 2 carbon filters and 2 Flouride filters. The carbon filters can purify 3000 gallons each (so that’s 6,000 gallons for a two-filter system) and are able to be cleaned up to 100 times using a Scotch-Brite pad. A stainless lid, grip pad, and BPA-free spigot complete the unit.
Why we love it: We can use the Berkey for travel, camping, emergencies, and limitless other situations. We can fill up anywhere and know that the water that we’re drinking is safe to drink. Knowing that we’re using a water purifier, and not a water filter gives us a lot of confidence in our water supply. We’ve spent the last 10 years enjoying tasty NYC water (this is not a joke, it’s actually good water - look it up). Traveling can mean you’re drinking water that tastes totally different and sometimes just plain gross. With our Travel Berkey purifier, we’re getting consistently clean flavor every time we fill a glass or water bottle. The Berkey is super economical. Paying a little over $300 for a system that provides 6,000gal of purified water is amazing. Lastly, the size is perfect for our van, as it provides plenty of water but doesn’t take up a lot of space. In fact - we love our Berkery so much - it has its own cabinet with food-grade dispensing tube above the kitchen counter!
Things to keep in mind: We have the travel size and we have 3 beings to keep hydrated daily. So we have to pay attention to the water levels and refill it multiple times per week. Our unit is in a specially made “Berkey Cabinet” with tie-down straps that allow us to drive around without worrying that it will tip over. You may have to do something similar or empty it before driving. Since we’re on the move and everything moves with us, we need to check and fill our Berkey when we’re going to be stationary for a few hours. We’ve made the mistake of filling it and driving off and found water in the “Berkey Cabinet” and sprinkled on the floor of our van. Whoops!
The take away: We love the delicious clean water! Yum! We are big fans of the Travel Berkey for our mobile lifestyle, but will absolutely use it in a sticks-n-bricks home - if the time comes. Get one for you or a loved one. Click on the image below for more info!
